Franchising and Licensing creates leverage.

What does leverage mean in the context of leadership?

My definition is “the ability to use a small amount of energy to gain a very high return in relation to the original energy spent”.

So how do we do this?

For a start a big advantage of franchising is the franchise partners all share a common goal. This goal is to use your secret sauce, your business model to serve their customers.

They require similar knowledge on your secret sauce and operating your business model. Training can be the same for every franchise partner.

If training is the same for everybody, then they can all access the same content.

Now you have the opportunity for scale leadership.

Scalable Leadership Tip #1

Ensure everybody uses the resources available to solve their problems.

If you find they are skipping the resources available because it’s easier to send you an email or call you on the phone… reply “where did you look in the manual?”

They end up getting the idea to check the manuals before making contact.

Scalable Leadership Tip #2

Set boundaries for when you are available.

You do not have to meet the urgency of your disorganised franchise partner just because they decide to work in the important and urgent time quadrant.

It’s fine not to have this set when you have 3 or 4 franchise partners, but it is a big mess when you have 20 all calling you all hours of the day.

I discovered this the hard way… and it can be hard, especially if you are like me and enjoy helping people.

Start in the beginning by setting boundaries.

Scalable Leadership Tip #3

Franchise partner problems are not your problems.

As I found out, if you don’t create the culture of franchise partners thinking for themselves, you become the problem solver.

Instead create the culture, every time you are called to solve a problem, franchise partners have at least one idea themselves to bounce of you. Then you become a sounding board, the franchise partners are empowered, and they themselves become the leader of their business.

These three tips will make a massive difference to how your role is as franchisor.

You get to spend your time on your leadership tasks… like vision, strategy, running your office.

And time away with family.
