Tomorrow my youngest daughter starts her first job.
It is working in a cafe.
She is a little nervous, but the business has done many things right to help her on her new adventure.
First, the Manager told me they like to employ local people. She said they feel as a local business they have a responsibility to support local people.
I really liked that.
Then she said to me they like to always have a local school young adult new to employment in training. “We do it to give a leg up to help someone start their career, even if it isn’t in the cafe scene. Getting a first job opens the door to other opportunities”.
I really liked that thinking too.
Here is the welcome process my daughter has experienced so far…
She had a meeting with the Manager who took the time to sit down and explain the induction process and what the expectations are.
Then, my daughter was introduced to everyone in the team who was working at the time.
And during the introduction everybody (including my daughter) was edified. Yasmin was not made to feel new and inadequate.
I thought that was awesome.
Yasmin (my daughter) was given her uniform, can and cannot do’s, paperwork, clear instructions on the next step of when to turn up for her first shift, what to expect on the first day… and the Manager specifically said “Do not be concerned, I will be with you on your first day”.
My young daughter felt so special and ready to enter the word of employment.
All the time the Manager was checking in with Yasmin, to ensure she understood, and if she had any questions.
I was really impressed.
You want repeatable systems and processes, rules and guidelines, strategy and purposefully created culture.
If you don’t, it will be created for you.
And when you leverage your business and scale… ad hoc doesn’t work.
Clear systems, guidelines and professional strategy pays dividends later.
Don’t expect franchisees to know what to do.
Success is when systems run the business, and people run the systems.
Then you can open a new location anywhere.
It all starts with first impressions.
Guess where I had my weekly “Goal Booster” coffee today? Yes off course, the cafe Yasmin will be working at tomorrow.
